I had linked the website here in my Links section and gave a little snippet of my thoughts on the site, but I never really got a chance to tell everyone my full thoughts on that site before. Well, here now is my chance, and since I want to tell all, I have to let it be known.
For one thing, I need to inform you of just what the site is. What this site does is take all of the Sailor Moon fanfiction that in the owners' minds are worth reading, weeds them out of the bunch, and then posts them onto this site for our reading pleasure. It has been online for quite some time, but hasn't gotten an update in about three to four years. It's worth a peek if you are ever able. http://serenity.ottawa-anime.org/ is the URL for the site. And it is true of what they have said about some fics on the site. They are quite good. However, why that is all good, and they do have the right to their own opinions, I do have to take exception that everyone will like their choices.
Now, I don't want to disrespect any of the authors that got posted on this site. They should be given the fairest amount of respect for just having the guts to write and put themselves out like that. And to be able to write good deserves respect, too. However, what's good for you may not necessarily be good for me.
Yeah, I do try to get everyone to like my fanfics, regardless if it's possible or not. I am sure everyone would love to have a muturally liked fanfic to be authored and published in any sort of medium. However, it all goes to preference. What do you want to read? How would you like to read it? Do you want to read something that follows the rules and expands on what you already know, or do you want to read something that challenges everything you thought you knew? And what do you consider to be good fanfiction? Is it something that is written while working with spell and grammer checkers, or is it more than just making sure everything is readable and makes sense?
Like, for instance, my personal preference is that the thing I'm reading needs to be unique. When I read a fic, I want to read something that inspires me. I want to see something that I haven't seen before, in some form. Something that challenges me, that makes me think. I don't want to read something that I could read in any other fic. This is one of the reasons why I wrote about purists the way I did in my first blog of my site. Because we would never have such fanfics if these purists succeeded moreso than they were able. But I digress.
You're preferences may differ from mine, though. You may want to read something that expands the universe. You may want to read a traditional fic. It's all in what you like. Or maybe the purist in you has decided that it wants a day off from the norm and you decide to read that fanfiction that has a character acting out of character, or OOC, for whatever reason it may be.
See, when it comes to fanfiction, there are alot of different things to consider when choosing what you believe are good fics. And while the site mentioned is good at telling you what they think are the best on the net, and they might be right in all their cases, they are only scratching the surface of the SM fanfiction universe. Plus, since the site hasn't been updated in years, one can only imagine how deprived of fresh, new authors one whould be if this was the only SM fic site they ever visited (I doubt highly one would visit only this site, but I may be wrong in that claim).
The Best SM Fanfiction may only be in the owners' own opinions. It may not necessarily be your own opinion. My advice: go to other sites in addition to this one. Go onto ASMR, Media-Miner, Fanfiction.net, and the like. Give yourself the opportunity to find yourself the best that the rest of the net has to offer. I'm not saying to steer clear of the site in question at all, but expand your horizons. Maybe you could find a fresh new author you think deserves to be listed on that site. Or, you can give them something to talk about yourself. Become an author and write your own fanfiction. And finally, be your own judge to what you think is good. You are the ultimate decider.
It is, after all, just one's opinion.
Good night, and good luck.
